To install some Windows XP updates or upgrades like Media Player 11, you need to activate your copy of Windows XP. I will show you how you can validate your copy of Windows XP as genuine.
Follow these steps:
1. Go to “RUN” and type REGEDIT. Windows registry editor will pop up.
2. Now expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\WPAEvents
3. On the right side, double-click on OOBETimer
4. In that windows, delete everything you can and exit.
5. Now, Go to “RUN” and type
%systemroot%\\system32\\oobe\\msoobe.exe /a
6. Activate Windows will pop up.
7. Choose Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows and click Next
8. Now, press on “Change Product Key”
9. Enter new key as
THMPV-77D6F-94376-8HGKG-VRDRQ
10. Click on “Update”
11. Now, Click on “Remind Me Later”
12. Restart the Windows
13. When system reboots, go to “RUN” and type
%systemroot%\\system32\\oobe\\msoobe.exe /a
14. You will see on “Activate Windows” that Windows is already activated.
15. Press OK to exit.

I had done this about 2 months back. But yesterday after using my pc for a while, I switched accounts. On logging in, the windows not genuine thingy came up in the corner. I was using microsoft security essentials for quite a while, but now I will not able to as it says windows did not pass validation.
What caused this? How can i get back validation? Thanks..
this happened to me as well. After enjoying for quite a while I’m back to a non-genuine version of xp. Guess MS caught up and invalidated the key mentioned here or something. i got it after a recent windows update. I tried to go through the same steps outlined here but WPAEvents in step 2 no longer exists. any other ideas???

I have followed the procedure above – and I even get at the end the message that my windows is activated.
However, when I try to update, I get the message that:

then I am asked if I want some help to validate…etc

I need to re-install windows as there seems to be a problem with current product key (even though it’s been validated many times, MS is suddenly telling me it’s invalid?) Anyway, i have a genuine windows disc but it’s not in it’s original cover so i don’t know the product key. Before wiping my pc clean, how can i find the product key of that disc?

I have contacted MS, but they want me to call them and right at the moment i cannot afford that call to the U.S. (Because of my location i’m being asked to call the US office)

i have previously asked this question before but, with a different explanation. i don’t have a product key number as the computer i am talking about is second hand and it says i maybe a victim of software counterfeiting,and i cannot get any windows updates as it says i have to validate to make sure i am using the correct software, but i cant. how much will genuine software cost? anyone help please!!!
