Gmail Labs again came up with an crazy experimental stuff, to send free SMS across multiple countries. You just need to enable SMS in chat gadget from labs settings. The countries which Gmail supports as of now include Ghana, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, Senegal, United States and Zambia.

Steps to enable SMS gadget:

1. Login to your Gmail account.
2. Click on Settings on the top right corner.
3. In setting window, select Labs tab.
   OR you can click on labs image  directly on top right
4. Enable the gadget “SMS in Chat gadget”.
5. This gadget depends on another gadget, so you also need to enable “Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat”
6. Click on “Save Changes”  to save the changes.
7. Now you can see the option “Send SMS” on the left side of Gmail.

To send SMS to any of your contacts, enter the contact name in the “Search, add or invite” box in Chat. From the box that appears to the right of the name, select Send SMS.

Enter the mobile number of your contact and click Save. In the chat window that appears, type your message and click Enter. Your message will be sent. If the recipient replies to your message, it will appear as reply in Gmail chat window.

Gmail SMS gadget is bound by SMS quotas. A quota is an allocation of SMS that you are able to send to a mobile phone.

• Initially, you are granted a quota of 50 messages
• Every time you send a message, your quota decreases by 1.
• Every time you receive an SMS message in Chat, you quota increases by 5, up to a maximum of 50.

In one of the post, I had mentioned about free SMS service from Way2SMS. This service from Way2SMS is accessible only by accessing their website. In this article, I will mention a free desktop client for sending free SMS through Way2SMS without logging on to their Webpage.

This is a small and fast desktop application which can send SMS on the fly.

The application is coded in C# and you requite .Net Framework 2.0 to be installed on your computer. The application does not need to be installed, just double click on the Way2sms client executable and you are ready to go.

In order to send free SMS using this desktop client, you need a Way2SMS account and internet connection.  Enter your mobile number and password, type in the mobile number to which you want to send the message along with the message body and hit Send button.

Way2SMS provides 140 characters out of 160 characters for user’s message and rest of characters will be filled with “Sent via WAY2SMS.COM”

Earlier we were receiving SMSs from banks, insurance companies or any other service provider from 10 digit mobile number but off-late we are receiving SMSs indicating some codes like TM-ICICIBNK, LM-Fortis etc. Do you know what all they stand for?

In order to protect consumer interest receiving unsolicited commercial SMSs, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has mandated all mobile operators in India to prefix an identification tag before all application-to-peer (A2P) commercial bulk SMSs which would reveal the name of the service provider along with location where the SMS originated along with the name of the company sending the SMS.

The alphanumeric identifier would be of the form XY-NAME, where X stands for code allocated for the service provider while Y stands for the service area where the SMS originated and NAME is the name of the company sending the SMS.

Take an example of TM-ICICIBNK, this code means that SMS is sent through Tata Teleservices from Mumbai by ICICI Bank.

So from now onwards whenever you receive the SMS of the form XY-NAME, you can easily decode it and know what’s the service provider, location and company name sending the SMS.
